Alessandro Vergani gioca negli Stuttgart Surge nella ELF dopo aver vinto nel 2022 il German Bowl con gli Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns e nel 2021 gli Europei con il Blue Team. È ingegnere spaziale, vive in Germania dal 2018, e abbiamo approfittato della partita dei Surge contro i Seamen per fargli qualche domanda prima dell’incontro (english version below).
Alessandro Vergani, offensive lineman Stuttgart Surge, prima cosa: ho guardato le vostre statistiche. Non avete un giocatore che sia nelle parti alte delle classifiche ma, ciononostante, siete 6-1. Ci spieghi perché avete questo record?
Prima di tutto, grazie per l’intervista, è un piacere essere a casa e parlare italiano. Il motivo è semplice: Jordan Neumann, head coach. Ha preso una franchigia che era 2-22 gli anni precedenti e quest’anno è 6-1. Abbiamo un piccolo intoppo con i Guards, la considero una bella doccia fredda che però ci ha svegliati. Meglio adesso che più avanti, onestamente. Davvero, è tutto grazie a lui, a coach Jordan. Lui è un genio del football, un nerd del football. Lui tieni molto ai giocatori: capisce che pur essendo dei semiprofessionisti, l’80% di noi ha anche un lavoro, una vita, una famiglia. Ci alleniamo tre volte a settimana, ma gli allenamenti sono efficienti al 100%, non si perde un solo minuto. Tutto grazie a lui.
La tua carriera è iniziata nei Daemons, poi ti sei spostato a Parma un anno prima di giocare ai Rhinos Milano con i quali hai vinto un Italian Bowl e perso quello successivo, proprio contro i Seamen. Tu che hai una visione a 360°, puoi darci la tua opinione sulla ELF? A me sembra che sia sostanzialmente divisa in due: le squadre tedesche o austriache da una parte, il resto dall’altra, fatto di squadre provenienti da mercati più piccoli che si affacciano a questo palcoscenico. Cosa ne pensi di questa dicotomia tra squadre teutoniche e il resto?
Stai parlando di squadre austriache e tedesche che già dominavano il panorama europeo – Alessandro ha vinto due CEFL Bowl, ndr – a livello sportivo, mentale e culturale sono su un altro livello. Fuori dall’Italia esistono anche altri sport, in Italia esiste solo il calcio. Tutti i fondi, le strutture sono dedicate a quello sport, al contrario di quanto avviene per esempio in Germania dove gioco io. La differenza è tutta lì.
Torniamo a Stoccarda, immagino tu abbia ricevuto, alla fine della strada con gli Unicorns, molte chiamate. Perché Stoccarda e non un’altra tedesca o, per esempio, un ritorno a Milano sponda Seamen stavolta?
Jordan. Io non voglio giocare per nessun’altro che non sia Coach Jordan. Abbraccio la sua filosofia di gioco, abbraccio il metodo che ha in allenamento, l’approccio alle partite e come vive il football.
Parliamo di prospettive, credo che il vostro obiettivo sia nientemeno che il titolo.
Sì, quello è l’unico obiettivo. Tutti i sacrifici che fai in stagione o anche in preseason, senza un anello da portare a casa non valgono niente.
Come va fisicamente la squadra? Ti spiego: guardando le partite a me sembra che rispetto all’inizio gli atleti siano più lenti, vedo un drastico decremento della velocità. Puoi farci un paragone tra la fisicità a inizio stagione e quella che avete ora?
Abbiamo fatto otto partite di fila. Tutte le settimane. In più io andrò fino a fine stagione perché settimana prossima gioco con la Nazionale. Molto faticoso. Infatti questa stagione sono focalizzato sul recupero. Mangiare bene, docce fredde, bagni freddi, allenamenti fatti bene in palestra, recovery booths.
Ci fai un piccolo paragone, per concludere, tra una squadra GFL come gli Unicorns e una di ELF?
Per me non è cambiato niente. La maggior parte dei miei compagni e dello staff è lo stesso. A livello di organizzazione, la dirigenza, se c’è Jordan, non interferisce con il football. I giocatori giocano, gli allenatori allenano, la dirigenza gestisce.

Alessandro Vergani, offensive lineman for the Stuttgart Surge, first off: I took a look at your stats. You do not have a single player high up on the stats, but nonetheless you are 6-1. Can you tell us, then, why you have this record?
First of all, thanks for the interview, it is a pleasure to be home and to speak Italian. Easy to tell: Jordan Neumann, head coach. He got a franchise that went 2-22 in the last two seasons and is 6-1 now. We stumbled upon the Guards, and I considered it a cold shower we needed in order to wake up. Better now than later in the season, honestly.
Really, it’s all about him, coach Jordan. He’s a football genius, a football nerd. He cares about us players: he understands that even if we are semi-pro, 80% of us have his job, life and family. We train three times per week, but those training sessions are minute-perfect, 100% efficient. We don’t lose a minute at practice, this is all thanks to him.
Your career started at Deamons, then you moved to Parma for one year before winning the Italian Bowl at Rhinos and participate in another one with them, lost to the Seamen. You have a 360° view over football in Europe, can you give us your opinion on the ELF? I feel like it is divided in two: German and Austrian team on one side, the rest on the other. The latter part made of smaller markets that are trying to enter this stage. What is your opinion about the dichotomy between German-speaking teams and the rest?
You talk about teams that were already dominating the European stage – Alessandro has two CEFL Bowl in his trophy room, ndr – on a sports, mental and cultural level tey are on a different level. Outside of Italy there are also other sports, whereas here football (soccer) only exists. Funds, grounds, structures, are dedicated to it. In Germany, where I play, this does not happen. That is the whole difference.
Let’s get back to Stuttgart. I can imagine you received several calls after the end of your experience at the Unicorns. Why Stuttgart and not, for example, another German team or, why not, Milan on the Seamen side this time?
Jordan. I wanna play for nobody else but Jordan. I embrace his football philosophy, his training regimen and methods, I embrace his approach to games and how he lives football.
Speaking about perspectives, I believe your target is the tiles, ain’t it?
Yes, that’s the only gola. All sacrifices, season, pre-season, it’s all geared towards that. Without a ring they don’t have any worth.
How is your team, physically speaking? I’ll explain this one better: judging by watching the games, I feel like teams are playing a bit slower. I see a drastic decrease of speed. What is the difference between the conditioning at the beginning of the season and now?
We played eight games in a row. Every week. To add up, I will play next week with the National team, not taking any bye week personally. It is very tiring.That is the reason I’m focusing mostly on recovery this year. Eating better, taking cold showers and baths, using recovery boots and having a good training schedule at the gym.
Can you, last question, compare a GFL franchise and an ELF one?
To me, nothing changed. The vast majority of people around me stayed the same as my experience with the Unicorns. About organization I can tell you that when you have someone like Jordan around, he is taking care of the football, not the management. Player play, coaches coach, management tries to manage as best as they can without interfering with field matters.
